Blaze guts generations-old lumber business in Wise, Virginia

An overnight fire has gutted an iconic Southwest Virginia business.

Investigators say a fire started a few minutes before midnight at Wise Lumber and Supply Company in downtown Wise, Virginia. According to the fire chief, the building was engulfed by the time crews arrived on the scene.

There is no word on what caused the fire but the chief says this mornings extreme cold made battling the large blaze even more challenging.

"All together, we probably had roughly 30, 35 fire fighters on scene between Wise and the City of Norton fighting the blaze. We just had to constantly keep rotating people in and out to keep them warm, or to keep them from getting hurt or anything,” said Wise County Volunteer Fire Chief Duane Phillips.

The family owned hardware has been part of the town of Wise for generations.

A fire fighter was taken to the hospital after suffering a medical condition on scene fighting the fire.

News 5's Mike Lucas is in Wise and will have a full report beginning at 5:30 p.m.
