A Dickenson County man was sentenced to 30 years in prison Thursday for shooting and wounding his wife and in-laws.

James Sykes entered an Alford plea to malicious wounding charges. An Alford plea means Sykes did not admit guilt but acknowledged their was enough evidence to convict him.

The shooting happened in July 2016. Police said afterwards he barricaded himself in his home in the Rose Ridge community. Sykes was inside for nearly three hours before surrendering.

Sykes will be on probation for 10 years after his release from prison.
