Financial gift of $20 million goes to UVa-Wise endowment
The University of Virginia's College at Wise has been given millions from a familiar source to help grow their scholarship opportunities for students.
Chancellor Donna P. Henry announced Monday the receipt of a $10 million gift from the Hunter Smith Family Foundation- the largest in the school's history. Matching dollars from the Wise County university's Bicentennial Fund brings the total to $20 million.
More than 100 qualified students beginning in the Fall 2018 semester will be able to apply for those funds. The influx of funding has allowed for the creation of a new scholar-athlete program and select students must complete 20 hours of community service to meet the eligibility requirements of the fund, the school announced.
The Smith family has made several contributions to the university in years past which included funding for the school's marching band and fine arts programming.
