Fire causing widespread power outages in Buchanan County


According to the Forestry Department, the scene has been cleared.

They say the fire started in the mountains behind Mountain Mission School. At some point while the fire was burning, a nearby power line broke, and fell on the boy's dormitory and caught fire there. Everyone was evacuated.

The Forestry Department says several acres burned, but an exact amount is not known at this time.

According to the Sheriff's Office, AEP has restored all power.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.


A fire burning in Buchanan County is causing widespread power outages.

According to the Buchanan County Sheriff's Office, a call came in around 7:30 p.m. reporting the roof of the Mountain Mission School was on fire.

They say the fire is also burning into the wooded area behind the school.

Police say widespread outages have been reported in the town of Grundy, as well as some homes in the Oakwood area.

They say the building was evacuated and no injuries have been reported.

The Forestry Department is on scene as well as AEP, and Rescue Squad 33.

At this time, the fire is contained, and AEP hopes to have power restored in two hours.
