The Virginia State Police has given more information concerning a chain reaction crash that involved six vehicles Friday morning near Abingdon.
The officer told News 5 that traffic was stopped on Highway 19 when the driver of an SUV struck a stopped vehicle. The SUV driver told the VSP Trooper that he had just taken his child to a local elementary school and "became very sleepy," unable to stop in time to avoid the stopped traffic.
The official confirmed that four people were taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
A multi-vehicle crash in Washington County, Virginia slowed traffic on Friday morning.
Preliminary information from the Virginia State Police says the six-vehicle wreck took place on Highway 19 at one mile west of Abingdon just after 8 a.m.
Authorities said four people were transported to area hospitals. A cause of the crash and the extent of injuries was not known. Traffic was congested for nearly two hours, the agency reported.
