Police accuse Coeburn residents of building pipe bombs

Two Wise County, Virginia men are charged following the discovery of pipe bomb materials in their home.

Jerry Douglas Sam Hensley, 53, and William Stewart Winebarger, 50, both of Coeburn, are charged with one count of manufacture, posses or use of a fire bomb or explosive devices and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, according to a report issued by the town's police department.

Officers had received information that the men had the bomb-making materials and police were allowed to search their home located in the 600 block of Crab Orchard Road, the report said.

The explosive ordnance disposal team from the Virginia State Police was called in and disarmed two devices, according to police. Investigators also recovered items that appeared to be used as shrapnel for the bombs.

Both men are being held in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Duffield. They are scheduled to be arraigned on their charges Feb. 18, according to court records.
