Smyth County police chase results in attempted murder charge
A police pursuit early Friday morning on Interstate 81 involved two collisions with Smyth County, Virginia's sheriff deputies.
Brian Turner Nunley, 37, of Abingdon, is charged with attempted capital murder, reckless driving, eluding along with other outstanding warrants, Sheriff Chip Shuler said in a report.
A deputy assisting with a mental health transport observed Nunley driving erratically on the road just after 1:30 a.m. and contacted Chilhowie police for help in stopping the suspect.
Nunley then sped away from the officer, beginning a 14-mile pursuit that ended in Washington County near Emory, the report said. Nunley's vehicle struck the deputies' cruisers and nearly hit the Chilhowie officer.
The two Smyth County officers were treated for minor injuries and then released. Nunley remains hospitalized in an Abingdon hospital, the sheriff said.
