Buchanan County sheriff's deputies are investigating a hostage situation out of Grundy, Virginia.

According to Buchanan County Sheriff Ray Foster, the situation started in Dickenson County on Monday morning. That's where officials say Rocky Reynolds shot his girlfriend, and then fled to Buchanan County.

They say he went to the Appalachian Inn in Grundy and barricaded himself in his sister's home.

Sheriff Foster says Reynolds let his sister out of the house, but kept another man hostage.

"The state police were called in along with state SWAT," said Foster.

Officials say the standoff lasted four hours. They were eventually able to get the hostage out safely.

Foster says after the hostage situation was cleared, armed forced broke down the door and entered the home Reynolds was hiding in.

News 5 spoke with one woman who works at the inn and witnessed police carry Reynolds out of the home.

"Police were picking him up by his hands and feet. There were several officers at his feet and a couple by his hands," said Appalachian Inn assistant manager Heather Dotson.

Deputies are now trying to find out the motive behind the morning shooting.

"We still have to talk to him and find out if it was drugs or a fight they had," said Sheriff Foster.

Foster says Reynolds shot his girlfriend in the head. He says the bullet grazed her and she's expected to be okay.

Officials say Reynolds is being booked in jail with charges pending in both Dickenson and Buchanan County.
