UPDATE: Wallens Ridge prison inmate guilty of attempted murder of guard
A Wise County state prison inmate already serving time for murder received an additional 35 years for trying to kill a prison guard in Big Stone Gap.
Thomas D. Groves, 47, entered an Alford plea during proceedings held Thursday in Circuit Court. That means Groves does not admit guilt but acknowledges the state has enough evidence to convict him.
Commonwealth's Attorney Chuck Slemp said Groves was being housed at Wallens Ridge State Prison in March of last year when he stabbed the officer in the neck with a homemade weapon while being returned to the general population after being segregated.
Groves was already serving a 42-year sentence for murdering the mother of his child in 2006 in Appomattox County.
