Sheriff: Reedy Creek man killed by hammer, 2 men charged

UPDATE 3:25 p.m.

Two men have charged with murder in connection with a homicide in the Reedy Creek area of Washington County, Virginia, according to Sheriff Fred Newman.

Newman believes the weapon used in the murder was a hammer.

Gary Lynn Murray, 19, and 38-year-old Timothy Dale Carrick were each charged with first-degree murder, robbery, and two conspiracy charges. They are being held without bond in Sullivan County Jail, awaiting extradition.

Investigators said last week a gold-colored pickup truck was seen leaving the area near the apartment of Steven Jeremy Hafen, 39, on Nov. 29. Hafen's body was found inside the dwelling located on Reedy Creek Road in Bristol the next day and an autopsy report said he died from a broken skull.

One of the men was driving the pickup truck investigators were looking for.

Carrick was arrested Friday, and Murray was arrested Sunday.

Sheriff Newman said the motive was robbery.
