Former Richlands, Marshall running back Devon Johnson dead at 25
Devon Johnson, whose bullish, straight ahead running style earned him the nickname "Rockhead" at Richlands High School and a short run in the NFL, died Tuesday in West Virginia. He was 25.
The Charleston Gazette-Mail said in a published report that a cause of death was not released but the family had requested privacy and prayers.
Johnson had a stellar career at the Southwest Virginia school from 2012 to 2015, rushing for more than 4,000 yards and 63 touchdowns and earning Group AA Offensive Player of the Year. He continued his play in college at Marshall University and then had a brief career with the Carolina Panthers.
Marshall head football coach Doc Holliday released the following statement Tuesday night:
“I am shocked and saddened at the news of Devon Johnson’s passing. Devon was a force in our program, both literally and figuratively. Whether on the field or off, his impact was immeasurable and he will be missed by so many at Marshall. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family.”
