WEATHER ALERT: Snow Expected Tuesday (1/29/19)

Weather Alert Day Tuesday

- Updated 1/29/19

The StormTrack 5 weather team expects rain, snow and frigid temperatures to impact our region from Tuesday, January 29th to Thursday, January 31st. The snow is expected mostly Tuesday and in spots Wednesday.

Early morning rain is expected to change to snow as a cold front moves through the area. Temperatures will stay very cold for Wednesday and into Thursday.

- Rain quickly changes to snow early Tuesday morning, with snow through midday.

- Precip moves in by daybreak with a brief period of rain before changing to all snow around 6-8am most areas.

- Temperatures fall quickly Tuesday afternoon into the 20s and then into the teens as we head into the overnight.

-Slick travel conditions

- School closings and delays

- Dangerous wind chills with frostbite possible Wednesday and Thursday.

As a strong cold front moves through on Tuesday, temperatures will fall quickly. We'll likely start off the day in the 30s, but fall into the 20s during the afternoon. Any rain will change to snow and any water on the roads will change to ice. Slick travel is likely for the commutes on Tuesday.

A light to moderate accumulation looks likely. 0.5-2" across the valleys looks like a good range, with higher amounts possible in the higher elevations and mountains of SW VA and NE TN. Additional snow, up to 1" (mainly in the higher elevations) will be possible on Wednesday as a clipper system comes through.

The cold will be here for a few days. On Wednesday, highs will struggle to climb out of the 20s. A few additional snow showers are possible as a weak clipper system moves through, but the bigger story will be the cold. Lows will be in the teens and single digits across the region with wind chill values below zero.

This level of cold can cause frostbite and hypothermia if you're exposed for a long period of time. Keep an eye on those who are more susceptible to the cold like the elderly and children. Don't forget your pets too!
